Pink Dolphins in Khanom: Thailand's Rare Marine Treasure

Source: ThaIest

Where to Find These Rosy Wonders

Khanom Beach offers a truly unique Thai wildlife experience - the chance to see elusive pink dolphins! Over 50 of these special marine mammals swim in the waters around Laem Prathab and Ao Kwang Phao in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.

About Pink Dolphins

These charming creatures are actually humpback dolphins whose color transforms as they age. Baby dolphins start life with dark grey skin, gradually changing to white or pink as they mature. Scientists believe this color change helps regulate their body temperature in warm waters.

Planning Your Dolphin Adventure

Visitors typically depart by long-tailed boat from Laem Prathab in the morning hours. Between February and September (avoiding rainy season), you'll have excellent chances of encountering both grey and pink dolphins swimming playfully near your boat.

While these dolphins have grown somewhat accustomed to humans, remember that feeding them disrupts their natural behaviors and harms the ecosystem.

Most boat tours combine dolphin watching with visits to Koh Nui's unique freshwater pond (surprisingly located in the middle of the sea) and the fascinating Pancake Rock formation that resembles folded fabric. The entire excursion typically lasts about 2 hours.

The Usual Tour Details

  • Cost: Approx 1,200 baht per boat (accommodates up to 8 people)

  • Best season: February to September

  • Best viewing time: Before 8:00 AM when dolphins actively feed near shore

From Koh Samui

Staying on the popular island of Koh Samui? Many tourists choose to see Khanom's pink dolphins as a day trip from there. Tours typically include:

  • Pink dolphin spotting by speedboat

  • Snorkeling at Tan Island

  • A visit to Pig Island to see its famous boars

  • Seafood buffet lunch

  • Hotel transfers

This option combines convenience with an action-packed day of unique wildlife experiences!
